SUVs usually make up the bulk of this list, but that’s been taken to extremes this month, with all but two cars coming from that category. The Ford Puma easily retained its position at the top of the table, aided by its What Car? Car of the Year status, but Mazda’s CX-30 tumbled 10 places to 20th position. The CX-30 enjoyed plenty of attention last month, being both new and competing in the vibrant family SUV market, but a three-star rating in our road test has no doubt dampened its appeal since.

By contrast, the Volkswagen Polo soared seven places, helped by the fact that we recently named it among our favourite cars for less than £200 per month. Indeed, buyers can currently get this five-star hatchback from just £151 per month on a PCP deal.
